A 12 day Photo Tour in Spain, trekking the spiritual Camino de Santiago (Way of St James). Delve deep into the life of the old pilgrims with photo sessions inside gothic cathedrals, private sessions with local artisans, bee keepers, and chefs. Supported the entire way by private transport and bilingual guides, you will enjoy all the freedom of a private photographic trip with all the advantages of a Nomad Expeditions Photo Tour.

You will be able to stop your walking at any time if you feel like and join the rest of the group by private transport with an english -spanish guide that will personally accompany you.

The opportunities we have for you, both as a traveler and a photographer, are anything but touristy. We want to capture the true meaning, the spirituality, the excitement, joy, and camaraderie of this road, creating a narrative with our cameras of what it truly means to be a pilgrim. No matter your faith or creed, this experience is not one to miss.

You will walk the same road so many have for hundreds of years, with interactive experiences you can only get on a Nomad Photo Tour. Explore the river Sil and Miño by boat, photographing the high, imposing canyons and clinging vineyards, shiver in the Haunted Forest of Galicia, and learn to ward off evil spirits with an authentic witches' brew and ceremony that is a delight for you and your camera.

Please note: this trip will require quite a bit of walking – from 7 to 9 miles/day-, though there will be private transport nearby at all times for anyone that needs it on any particular day, as well as a guide waiting at the destination point of each day for anyone who needs to arrive early via car. Also, this tour WILL qualify you for a certificate of pilgrimage, the signed document that says you completed the spiritual road and confers special status on the bearer.

Place, characters, frame, the right exposure and the aperture are concepts that I already knew but Harry Fisch taught me how to merge all those elements together in order to get the perfect picture, which can tell a story. I learned that behind a picture there is a whole before and after process. The trip was an enriching experience in my professional and personal life. Would I do it again? Yes, for sure. Thank you Harry.

ITINERARY

Pre-Tour (DAY 0): Madrid

Arrival at Madrid-Adolfo Suarez Barajas Airport, pickup and transfer to hotel.

For those who arrive before the start of the tour, we will have a special day in Madrid planned, should you care to partake. A short walking tour of the Barrio De Las Letras, home of Lorca, Cervantes, and more, followed by a spectacular dinner at an established favorite in town, and a flamenco show and private photo session with the dancers.

Overnight in Madrid.

DAY 1: Madrid-Leon

In the morning we will leave by bus and head to the city of Léon. Here, we will have a visit to Gaudí’s famous Casa de los Botines for a photo session, the Gothic Catheral, and then have lunch in a local restaurant.

After lunch, we will leave walking along the first stretch of the Camino de Santiago, taking in the lush green of Northern Spain, documenting the pilgrim’s path to peace with our cameras for a few hours until sunset.

In the evening we will find our accommodations along the road and stay overnight. Dinner will be at the accommodation.

DAY 2: Leon-Astorga (16.4 kms / 10.2 miles walking and approximately 20 miles by private bus.)

In the morning just after a very early breakfast, the bus will pick us up and we will head to Hospital de Órbrigo, arriving by 7am. Here, we will view and photograph an old Roman bridge, before continuing our photographic journey through the province of Castilla y León.

After about 10 miles of walking we will arrive in Astorga just in time for lunch and check in at our hotel. We will have a quick tour of Gaudí’s Episcopal Palace for a photo session there, playing with the way the afternoon light falls in this unique architectural structure, before heading off to see the man who calls himself the Lord of the Rings.

Herminio Arias García is a local artisan who has spent years perfecting his crafting skills, with wood, bone, and horn. He particularly likes to make rings and flutes, as well as a typical knife from the region called the navaja maragata, a carved handled folding pocket knife – all things that pilgrims would have taken with them on their journey to Santiago. We will learn how the traditional carvers of his region do their magnificent work, and have a private photo session with him.

At night we will return to Astorga for dinner. Overnight in the hotel.

DAY 3: Astorga-Molinaseca (16.4 kms / 10.2 miles walking and approximately 32 miles by private bus.)

Once again, early in the morning we will set off by bus, arriving at the Cruz de Ferro by 7am in the new day light. The Cruz de Ferro is a large iron cross that marks the highest point of the Camino, and was supposedly build in order to be seen above the snows that frequently fall and cover the paths in this area. But also, it is a special place on the Camino – pilgrims carry to it and leave a rock, representing their burdens, to leave at its base, so that they may walk the rest of the road light of heart and of step. We will have some time photographing this important monument, and leaving our burdens as well, before we begin our walk.

The walk will take us 10 miles through the forests of Molinaseca, rick in rocky hills and tranquil pines, enough to make you feel the true spirit of the road, and find some peaceful pockets to take a few photos as well.

Once we arrive in Molinaseca, we will lunch in a local restaurant, and then have a free afternoon in town to rest or explore. Just before dinner we will have a photo review session.

Dinner and overnight in hotel.

DAY 4: Molinaseca-Villafranca del Bierzo (15.9 kms / 9.9 miles walking and approximately 13 miles by private bus.)

Early in the morning bus transfer to Ponferrada. we will tour the gorgeous city of Ponferrada, the Capital of the Bierzo region, by bus.

Then we will bus to Camponaraya, and begin our 10 mile walk to Villafranca del Bierzo. The forests will start to become richer as we reach to Galician border, and wildlife from deep to raptor birds await us amongst the trees.

Once in town we will lunch at a local restaurant and then head out for a tour of one of the many bodegas that Villafranca has to offer, including a photo session of the traditional methods of wine making in this region.

And, as an extra treat, we will have a wine tasting and dinner at the bodega after our tour and photo session.

Overnight in hotel.

DAY 5: Villafranca del Bierzo-Triacastela (11.4 kms / 7.1 miles walking and approximately 26 miles by private bus.)

Once again we will leave early in the morning by bus, arriving at a high hill on the camino, where we can start our walk down to Triacastela, arriving at 12:00.

This day will be a shorter walk, to give us a break from all the hard walking and non stop days we’ve had before this. We’ll lunch in Triacastela among the gothic buildings and old stone plazas, and then, if you care to, there is a pilgrim’s mass in the church in town, open to all people who would like to attend that are walking the road. It happens every day.

In the evening we will have a photo review session and dinner.

Free night. Overnight in hotel.

DAY 6: Triacastela-Sarria (12.4 kms / 7.7 miles walking and approximately 6 miles by private bus.)

In the morning, we’ll set off for the Monasterio de Samos, or The monastery of San Xulián de Samos, founded in the sixth century, belongs to the order of the Benedictines. The monastery was the School of Theology and Philosophy. It is an important waypoint on the Camino. It has been home to many and had quite a far reaching influence in the Middle Ages, as evidenced by its size, but sadly due to a fire it was almost completely rebuilt in the early 1800s, which is why the architecture differs greatly from part to part. We will stop to have a photo session in the monastery, documenting this safe haven for travelers, before continuing our own pilgrimage towards Sarria.

After arriving in Sarria we will head to the Feira Tradicional Ganadeira, a fixed open air market in the center of Old Town, for lunch and a free spirit kind of photo session. We’ll take in all the sights and smells of traditional Galician food, the whirl of color and noise, the crafts, the people we see with some off the cuff photo shooting.

After a rest at the hotel, we’ll have dinner and a photo review session.

Overnight in the hotel.

DAY 7: Sarria-Portomarin (13.7 kms / 8.5 miles walking and approximately 5 miles by private bus.)

We’ll head out in the morning by bus up to the Romanesque church of Santiago de Barbadelo, which dates to the 11th century. After a quick photo session in this beautiful and picturesque little church, we will start our walk to the Galician village of Portomarin, arriving at noon.

After lunch and a quick rest at the hotel, we’ll leave in the afternoon for a tour of a bodega of aguardiente in O Saviñao – this is a typical liquor of the region with a long history, so, something the pilgrims of old would have definitely encountered. After a tour of the bodega, we’ll head off on a special private boat tour of the Miño and Sil rivers.

Canyons rise up on all sides, taking you to another world. Beautiful Monasteries dot the landscape beyond us, far from touched by tourism, looking as they did five hundred years ago thanks to a mild climate that protects these lands. You will photograph a landscape set back in time where for centuries men have devoted their time to knowledge and the mystery of God.

Some half a kilometer up the canyon walls you will see vineyards on the steep slope, home of Amandi wine. It was so treasured by the Romans it was called the gold of the River Sil, and is produced exclusively by the Benedictine monks that still live along the river. We will stay on the boat until sunset.

Then, we will return to Portomarin for dinner. Overnight in the hotel.

DAY 8: Portomarin-Palas de Rei (13.5 kms / 8.4 miles walking and approximately 4 miles by private bus.)

As usual we will leave early in the morning and go by bus to Hospital del Cruz, from where we will walk almost 10 miles to Palas de Rei. The forest in Galicia is thick and green, and also, as they tell it, haunted. It is called the Bosque Animada, full of spirits that might care to do you harm, once the sun goes down. We will take our time photographing the beautiful and spooky places we find along the road, but fortunately, we will not be there after dark!

We will lunch in Palas de Rei before heading out to the Granja Arqueixal – an eco farm that specializes in traditional cheese making. These farms, representative of places pilgrims could have stopped for supplies and rest, will take us back in time to the old days of the Camino. We will have a private photo session with the farmers and their animals, even trying our hand at the cheese making ourselves if we so wish.

Dinner and overnight in Palas de Rei.

DAY 9: Palas de Rei-Arzúa (12.6 kms / 7.8 miles walking and approximately 12 miles by private bus.)

We will bus in the morning to our start point, leaving early, and walking along the forest road from Palas de Rei to our stopping point. Once there, we will have lunch at a local restaurant.

Today on our path of the pilgrim, we will be setting off to see O Enredo do Abelleiro, which is a working bee farm and a museum for traditional bee keeping. As honey was a staple food across the Mediterranean before sugar was widely introduced to the continent, bees and their keepers played an important role in creating cuisine for the region. We will have a photo session here.

Then, we will head back to Arzúa by bus. Once in town we will check in at the hotel, and then head to dinner and a photo session at La Nueva Pulpeira de Arzúa, which is a traditional seafood restaurant that deals primarily in the famous Galician Octopus! There, we will have a fun and interesting photo shoot with the owner of the restaurant who will show us exactly how these famous octopi are prepared and served.

Overnight in the hotel.

DAY 10: Arzúa-Santiago (10.6 kms / 6.6 miles walking and approximately 14 miles by private bus.)

In the morning we will arrive in the town of Ras by bus and begin our final walk of the tour, finally arriving at Santiago de Compostela by noon.

Congratulations, pilgrim! You have reached the end of the journey! To celebrate, we will attend noon mass at the Cathedral, the proud bearers of a certification of pilgrimage, and then head to a local restaurant for lunch.

Afterwards we will check in and rest at the hotel, then have our final photo review session before dinner.

After dinner we will participate in and photograph our very own private Conxuro de Queimada, a traditional conjuring of good luck in the form of beautiful blue and orange flaming alcohol. We will photo document it from start to finish.

Most Spanish celebrations have a typical food or drink associated to them, and that is the case of the queimada. This is a traditional Galician beverage made from orujo or aguardiente (strong alcoholic liquor distilled from wine and grape or herbs pressings), orange or lemon peels and sugar as main ingredients. Some people also add coffee beans, fruit chunks or cinnamon. You have to burn it slowly in a clay pot. When it is set alight, it shows beautiful blue flames.

During the preparation of the queimada, you have to recite the ‘conxuro da queimada’, (the spell of queimada), a poem that provides protection against black magic and witches, and keeps bad spirits away.

Overnight in hotel.

The majority of trips are not strenuous (see exceptions for particular destinations) and anyone who is reasonably fit should be able to take part in most of the activities. You may experience general fatigue due to the long flights and the change in time zones. Some hotels do not have elevators or air conditioners.

If you have any special needs or any physical condition that you feel might prevent you from fully participating, please contact Trekking y Aventura.

Each participant must be covered by medical insurance that is valid overseas. The applicant’s travel insurance must provide cover against personal accident, medical expenses, emergency repatriation and personal liability.

We strongly recommend insurance coverage for cancellation be taken at the same time as payment is made, as no exception to the cancellation provisions that can be made. We also recommend provisions for curtailment, loss of luggage and personal effects. We recommend the purchase of the optional supplemental travel insurance package to protect oneself in case of an unexpected medical emergency.

We strongly urge you to evaluate your risk and to take out insurance on your trip. It is vital for you to realize that if you experience a delay or find it necessary to cancel or cut short your trip for any reason, you will lose part or the entire sum you’ve invested in it.

Travel insurance helps to minimize the risk of monetary losses you would incur in the event of a delay of your departure due to weather, airline strike, missed connection, etc., your inability to travel for reasons such as illness, injury, unforeseen financial complications and other personal circumstances, or if you were required to cut your trip short for medical or any other reasons.

If an expedition is canceled by us prior to departure, Trekking & Adventure will provide the participant with a full refund of monies paid to them; except in the event cancellation is due to a significant event that makes it infeasible to operate the expedition as planned, in which case T&A will provide the participant with a refund and/or credit toward a future Nomad Photo Expedition trip equivalent to monies paid to them.
