It’s a hot day. Waves of heat rise off the desert encampment as I sit on a shaded verandah with my generous host. Dhanraj Malik Prince, son of King Malek Shri Mahomed Mahomed Shabbirkhanji Azizkhanji, is a real personality here. Known for being both friendly and fair, he sits, resolving disputes between his subjects. Next to him, a worker from the salt pans holds an umbrella silently.

An extraordinary photo tour in Uzbeksitan in which we will be following the ancient Silk Road trade routes from Khiva in the west to Bukhara and finally Samrkand. There is a lot to see and do on this photographic trip in Uzbekistan, but –fortunately- it still lacks the theme park polish of a well-known destination, or the artifice that goes along with it. We never have to deal with a pushy restaurateur, a ticket tout, or a carpet salesman trying to upsell us. Even on what were once Silk Roads, we see a lot of donkey carts, bicycles, and rusted-out Kamaz trucks (Soviet vehicles that replaced camel caravans in the late 20th century), but few, if any, other tourists on busloads outside the cities.

Happy to have been awarded with the Gold Award in Fine Art, by the Paris Photo Awards (PX3). Receiving over 4,300 entries from 120 countries around the world, the 2021 edition of the PX3 competition proved to be another outstanding photographic event.

The series, “The Art of Disappearing” tries to bring awareness of the languid evanescence of the Arbore tribe in Ethiopia where their last 2,300 members are currently living. The modernization of the roads and the easier access of visitors is changing their way of life.

Such thing as a photo tour to Turkey was not even imaginable, of course. A 19th-century travel photographer who wanted to document their adventure photography trip needed to process their images immediately following exposure, which meant they required all of their equipment on hand. This entailed transporting a portable darkroom, a plethora of hazardous chemicals, plate holders, tanks, heavy glass plates, and, as it many times happens today, a large camera and tripod.
