You will have the chance to photo document life on the Mekong River as you float down it on a houseboat, or the daily adventures that happen on the railway tracks from Hanoi to Long Bien Bridge. There will also private photo sessions with models in traditional dress racing vespas through the colorful streets, chances to work with motion and also low light as you explore the caves of Pak Ou to discover the secrets within. Photograph climbers freefalling off karst rock cliffs into deep water pools, and of course, the mystery and magic of the Ang Kor temples where we will run private photo sessions with monks. This is a chance to bear witness to history, the way in which it has grown into the vibrant modern life thriving in South East Asia today.

This trip to Havana has been an incredible experience. I have learned to see through my camera in a whole new way, experimenting storytelling, enjoying each and every day new situations and the special locations that Harry was offering us. Harry is a the perfect master of ceremonies with his open, elegant and respectful attitude towards cultural matters. He creates an outstanding atmosphere to transform his trips in a way that exceed our expectations

ITINERARY

DAY 1. – BANGKOK

Upon arrival, reception at the airport for transfer to hotel.

Free time for the rest of the day.

DAY 2. – BANGKOK.

Today we will set out on a half-day visit down the Chao Praya River in a Long Tail Boat. On this ride we will have plenty of time to photograph the landscape before arriving at the one of a kind Damnoen Saduak floating market. Here will we have a sponateous sort of shoot as the blur of boats and colorful clothes, wares, and people moves around us busily buying and selling, their canoes crammed together in the narrow river spaces, full of fruits and foodstuffs.

In the afternoon we will have, depending on schedules, a photo session with professional Thai boxers at a local gym. After spending a little time talking and getting to know the subjects, we will start the session. We will have time for posing and portraiture as well as movement based shots of the boxers in action.

Overnight in the Hotel.

DAY 3. – BANGKOK.

In the morning we will visit Klong Toey, which is a small neighborhood that many people are unaware of, but has interesting character. It boasts many green spaces interspersed with traditional architecture.

The town sits on the Chao Phraya River, where boats and fishing points are bustling from sunup to sundown. There are throngs of people and the district is chaotic but graceful. It is also a refuge for immigrants and the working class of Bangkok, as well as the city’s largest port.

DAY 4. – FLIGHT BANGKOK/CHIANG RAI/BOAT ALONG MEKONG

We leave for the airport to board the flight to Chiang Rai, the northernmost city in the country. Upon arriving we board on a public ship, then transfer later to our own private ship to sail along the Mekong River for two days, observing the life on its shores and the spectacular scenery. If there was ever a day to work on documenting a photographic story, today is it.

In the afternoon we will arrive in Pakbeng, a small town halfway between Luang Prabang and Houeixai, and a mandatory stop for all ships to pass the night. Here there are guest houses and some small restaurants, and a market where the local mountain dwelling tribes come to buy supplies. In recent years the roads have been paved and some electric lights installed in the area, but otherwise it maintains a an older ambiance, and we will have time to continue working on our photographic story of life along this river as we stop in the town.

Overnight in our Hotel at Pakbeng

DAY 5. –SAILING ALONG THE MEKONG/LUAN PRABANG

We continue on our private boat along the Mekong River to Luan Prabang, stopping en route at Pak Ou to visit some caves containing hundreds of Buddha statues and we will be visiting several hill tribes. We will work on low light photography and the interesting results we can get from a session inside these caves.

In the afternoon, we arrive in Luang Prabang, whose name means “Capital of the fine gold Buddha”.

Disembark and transfer to the hotel at Luang Prabang

DAY 6. –LUANG PRABANG

Today we will spend the morning touring the city, and taking some more spontaneous shots as we move around it, catching glimpses of its life and daily routine.

If we have time, we will leave the town by mountain road to visit the waterfalls of Khuang Xi, where water flows over steps of calcified rock and forming natural clear-water pools. We can stop and take a dip and relax a while in these beautiful springs before heading back. On the way back we will stop in the town of Ban Thapaene where the ethnic minority peoples called Khmu (specifically the Mon-Khmer) live. They were the original inhabitants of the Indochinese peninsula. We will also stop in the town of Ban Xom, famous for its cotton textiles, and the town of Ban Xang Khong, known for paper and Sayabury work, and also for using elephants as a means of making goods.

In the afternoon we will head to Wat Mai. Constructed in 1976, it is famous for its five scaled wooden rooves which follow architectural tradition. We will go up Phousi Hill which is in the middle of the city, to the temple of Chom Si. From here we will have some truly incredible and incomparable views of the river, the palace, and the city, and we will spend plenty of time there capturing the surroundings with our cameras. Finally ,we will head to Vat Siphouthabath nearby, which is son the Mekong River, to photograph the river, the boats, and the returning fishermen at sunset.

DAY 7. –LUANG PRABANG –FLIGHT TO HANOI

Today we head to the airport and fly to Hanoi. Once we process our visas we will head to the hotel. If we have time, we will head out in the evening to orient ourselves to the city.

Day 8.- HANOI - SAPA

Today wake early and head to Hoen Kiem Lake which is a blur of activity at this time of morning. In any open space communal exercise aerobics takes place from about 5-7am and is wonderful to photograph (see a stop motion that I did on this here - https://vimeo.com/49064182).

At this time of morning we can find groups doing Laughing Yoga, Tai Chi and even ballroom dancing – and though it is not posed, it is organic and natural, and a great time for us to work with motion related shots.

In the afternoon we will take a walk along the train tracks that head from Hanoi to Sapa to witness and photograph and tell the story of life on the rails. There is a surprising amount of it, more than one might think. From the diligent railway workers to the little houses and their residents, and some people drifting along the tracks towards whatever their destination, we will have ample time to stop and work with whatever we encounter along the way.

We’ll continue walking until we reach the spectacular Long Bien Bridge, which overlooks the valleys and hills we walked through. From the overlook you can see banana plantations and workers toiling in the fields, the red river, and the lush, viridian jungle of Vietnam.

In the afternoon we will be doing a tour of the city in rickshaws, which is undoubtedly the best way to see the city.

Joining us will be three vietnamese models wearing traditional Ao Dai costume and all driving vespas. On this afternoon we will visit some of Hanoi’s most spectacular locations and each of you will have an opportunity to work with the models to get beautiful shots for your portfolio. You will also have the opportunity to photograph the models as we drive around, a great opportunity to play with long exposures and movement.

In the evening train journey to Sapa

Day 9.- SAPA

We arrive early in Sapa. Today we will be visiting the Tam Duong area which is a frontier town situated in a beautiful valley between limestone rocks. It is also a place of cultural value and breathtaking mountainous scenery. Ethnic tribal communities of H'Mong, Man Tien, Lu and Cu Chu people live in this area and today we will concentrate on environmental portraiture.

We will spend the full day of visiting remote villages, hidden behind mountains and hills. We will cross a number of suspension bridges that cross the river valley and you will see the spectacular rice terraces.

We will overnight in homestays in one of the villages. Your accommodation tonight will be simple but the experience will be unforgettable.

Day 10.- SAPA - HANOI

This morning we will wake early to photograph the surrounding landscape of the Tam Duong area as the sun rises over the valley. We will return to our homestay at 8:30am for a late breakfast and guests will have free time to rest until 11am. We’ll then head back towards Sapa stopping at villages on the way. We’ll arrive back in Sapa in the late afternoon and you’ll have free time to explore until our train leaves at the appointed time.

Overnight train to Hanoi

Day 11.- HALONG BAY

We will arrive back in Hanoi early in the morning and then we will travel to Halong by minibus. We will arrive in Halong at about midday and lunch will be served on our private luxury Halong Junk boat.

We’ll be joined on the boat by three rock climbers and they will be taking us to some of the most picturesque locations of the area where they will be deep water soloing up the spectacular karst landscapes and then free falling into the water.

We’ll have kayaks on the boat for everyone so that you’ll be free to move around the climber finding the best angle for your photograph. We’ll have 2 hrs with the climbers and then we’ll get back on the boat and head to one of the islands in time for sunset. We’ll walk to a vantage point where we get a view of the bay from above for a chance to capture the bay.

Day 12.- HALONG BAY- HANOI

This morning we will once again wake early as we visit a floating fishing village and photograph the fisherman as they start their day as dawn. We’ll have breakfast on the boat and then make our way back to Hanoi .

EXTENSIONS

DAY 13. – FLIGHT SIEM REAP- ANG KOR.-

Hotel Check-in and visit of Siem Reap

DAY 14, 15 . ANG KOR TEMPLES .

DAY 16 . - SIEM REAP. DEPARTURES

ANGKOR

The city of Angkor, founded in 889 under the name of Yaso-dharapura, was the capital of practically all Khmer kingdoms and is considered one of the most splendid civilizations of Southeast Asia. The jungle took over the mythical city and the roots of the trees claimed its walls. In the past century the whole Angkor area was covered by the forest. It is a red-colored city because of its sandstone buildings, which comes from the quarries of Phnom Kulen, located four kilometers from the ancient capital. The temples built here constitute one of the most impressive sacred universes in the world.

Siem Reap is the base for visiting the monuments in the area, as it is located just a few kilometers from the temples.

Over the course of these three days, we will be doing many things, and some are dependent on schedules and availabilities, thus, they are not listed in any particular order here. You will have a more set idea of the schedule for these three days closer to the departure date.

We will be avoiding tourist crowds by chasing the light at dawn and dusk, and visiting locations that are off the tourist circuit. Taking you beyond temples and ancient ruins. Tim will be guiding you through this world famous place and one of the most visually rich locations in the world. We will be at the best places at just the right times to catch the most spectacular scenes.

Tour Highlights:

The Bayon, with its gigantic heads of the Buddha staring into the four cardinal directions. Explore its walls and climb to the apex to see the giant-sized heads eye-to-eye.

Angkor Thom, the ancient capital of Angkor, with its intricately carved terraces, palaces and imposing gates.

Angkor Wat, the jewel in the crown of Angkor; look for the statues of Vishnu clad in saffron robes while you wander the complex’s passageways, courtyards and corridors.

Ta Prohm, where the forest has taken over the temples, with giant fig trees and their serpentine roots growing all over temple ruins.

We will also hold sunrise and sunset visits and photo sessions with monks at the Angkor temple sites. Feel free to converse with the monks or use our guide to assist with translation.

We will visit one of the oldest wats in the region, where monastic life seamlessly blends with village life. You’ll visit a school for monks and attend evening prayers, and experience Buddhist traditions being lived and practiced in the 21st century.

We will also have the opportunity to take a boat ride up the river to photograph traditional life on the banks of the river and Lake Tonle Sap (the largest inland body of water in Cambodia). We will have ample time to work with what and who we find along the river.

We strongly recommend insurance coverage for cancellation be taken at the same time as payment is made, as no exception to the cancellation provisions that can be made. We also recommend provisions for curtailment, loss of luggage and personal effects. We recommend the purchase of the optional supplemental travel insurance package to protect oneself in case of an unexpected medical emergency.

We strongly urge you to evaluate your risk and to take out insurance on your trip. It is vital for you to realize that if you experience a delay or find it necessary to cancel or cut short your trip for any reason, you will lose part or the entire sum you’ve invested in it.

Travel insurance helps to minimize the risk of monetary losses you would incur in the event of a delay of your departure due to weather, airline strike, missed connection, etc., your inability to travel for reasons such as illness, injury, unforeseen financial complications and other personal circumstances, or if you were required to cut your trip short for medical or any other reasons.
