We stand close enough to feel the kundu drum in our chest as the Huli Wigmen dance in full regalia — wigs grown from their own hair, faces blazing with ochre and red. We watch the ghostly Mudmen of Wrup Kaip emerge from the forest like figures from a fever dream, their heavy clay masks and pale bodies moving with slow, haunting deliberation. At Avi, the Skeleton Men materialize from shadow, their bone-white and charcoal-painted bodies invoking the threshold between the living and spirit worlds.


We witness the Kur Wari dancers of Alkena Village move in tight, hypnotic formation, feathers and ornaments catching the afternoon light. We document the playful coded choreography of courtship performances in Kaip and Mindima, where song, laughter, and tradition intertwine. We photograph the communal Mumu feast in Paiya Village — fire, hot stones, banana leaves, and the steam of a meal cooked underground — and sit quietly with the Nipuka healer as herbs, chants, and ancient knowledge fill the air. We observe the intensity of Keeya initiation rituals, and let the evening dissolve gently with the acoustic harmonies of the Korokua String Band.

Two weeks after our arrival in the states, we are just now coming down from what was probably one of the best trips of our lives. As professionals in the photography business, we went into this experience open-minded and ready to explore. Harry’s energy and commitment not only matched ours, but exceeded it. You would think that a photographer who has been to a country numerous times would somehow let the cumulative effect of all his knowledge make him a complacent and a “dial it in” kind of leader. Harry was the very opposite. His energy and enthusiasm was infectious. His knowledge and compassion combined with his ability to adapt made our trip incredible. His thirst for humanity and ability to highlight what we would normally walk past, was phenomenal and for two people who are no strangers to the profession of street shooting, we learned and we grew immensely. Harry takes your hand when you want him to, and he will step to the side when you are ready to soar. He is an ally, a confidant and a true teacher.

ITINERARY

 

Day 1 - INTERNATIONAL ARRIVAL – PORT MORESBY, PNG


Upon early arrival in Port Moresby , after clearing arrival controls and changing to local currency, you will be accompanied to our hotel. Depending on your arrival time. A half-day exploration of Port Moresby awaits, offering a glimpse into the capital's unique blend of Western resemblances and rich cultural heritage. Our journey will take us through the stilt houses of Poreporena, the bustling Koki fish market, and the verdant Port Moresby Nature Park, home to Papua New Guinea's endemic flora and fauna.


Photography Notes: Opportunities for candid street photography and capturing vibrant market scenes will be abundant, as well as wildlife photography in the Nature Park.

Day 2 - PORT MORESBY – MOUNT HAGEN. FLIGHT AND URUP KAIP TRIBE


After breakfast, a flight transports us to Mt. Hagen. Here, we delve into the lives of the Urup Kaip clans, witnessing a traditional highlands society still vibrant with practices like polygamy.
It was not until the year 1930 that the first white men reached these highlands in search of gold. At that time, they discovered more than a million indigenous people who still lived in the stone age. We will make a half-day cultural visit to the people of the Urup Kaip clans, an example of the traditional exercise of authority in the Highlands. We will learn about their tribal organization, where the heads of the clans still practice polygamy, surrounded by their wives, children, pigs, and orchards.


Photography Notes: This day provides a unique opportunity to photograph the traditional lifestyles and ceremonies of the Urup Kaip tribespeople, capturing their rich cultural expressions.

Day 3 - MT. HAGEN, KUMDI VALLEY. MARKET AND MELPA TRIBES


A visit to the Mt. Hagen Market starts our day, followed by an immersive experience in the Kumdi village, home to the Melpa tribe.
Its inhabitants belong to the Melpa tribe and wear spectacular clothing and painted faces. They will welcome us with their traditional dances and will even be able to have our faces painted by them. They will accompany us, and we will have the opportunity to visit their traditional homes.


Photography Notes: The day offers rich opportunities for portrait and cultural photography, especially capturing the tribe's traditional dances and attire.

Day 4 - MT. HAGEN to KUNDIAWA. ROAD TRANSFER AND SIMBU CULTURE AND TRADITIONS


Our journey through the Highlands Highway leads us to Simbu Province, where the Skeleton Tribe's unique traditions await. After breakfast, we will take the road known as the Highlands Highway to move further east, to the province of Simbu. We will travel along the Okuk Highway through the Waghi Valley. We will cross the province of Jiwaka, passing through tea and coffee farms and continue to Simbu Province. We will arrive at Mindima around mid-morning.
This is where the Skeleton Tribe lives. Dressed in their terrifying clothing of human skeletons, they will perform for us the representation of their legend. We will have lunch at Mindima Eco Lodge.


In the afternoon, we will visit the Nintul village to witness the Simbu Women’s Initiation Ceremony as well as the Courtship Ceremony that takes place at the Men’s Haus. We will have the opportunity to meet the head of the clan and understand the relevance of these rituals in the tribes.

Day 5 - SIMBU – PRIVATE EXCLUSIVE GATHERING


A private and exclusive gathering featuring Tribal Singsing groups from various highlands tribes provides an exclusive photographic experience. Today, you will enjoy a private meeting with Tribal Singsing Groups. In a private arena, it will involve relevant Highlands Tribal Groups from the Southern Highlands, Mt Hagen, and Jiwaka, the famous Huli Wigmen among them. This will be a very special day allowing us to be very close to the dancers and take unique pictures.


Photography Notes: Close-up photography of the different tribal groups, and other performers in vibrant, traditional dress will be a highlight.

Day 6 - KUNDIAWA to GOROKA. ROAD TRANSFER AND ASARO MUDMEN CULTURE AND TRADITIONS


Our scenic drive to Goroka introduces us to the Asaro Mudmen's haunting performances. After breakfast, we will transfer further East to Goroka in a 2 1/2 hour scenic drive along the Highlands Highway. We will travel through the fertile Asaro Valley, passing coffee, banana, taro, cassava, sugar cane, and other vegetable plantations in the surroundings of well-organized farms until we reach Geremaika. 

There, we will witness the world-famous performance of the Asaro Mudmen, with their heads covered by menacing white mud heavy masks.
We will collaborate with the villagers to prepare and cook our food in the traditional earth oven “mumu” that we will taste together with them.
After lunch, we will enjoy another very special performance, the Moko Moko. This is a sexual ritual that the Asaro tribe performed after returning victorious from their -not so long ago- tribal fights.


Photography Notes: The Mudmen, with their eerie masks, present a unique opportunity for capturing hauntingly beautiful portraits and the intricacies of their traditional "mumu" cooking.

Day 7- GOROKA – PORT MORESBY


Returning to Port Moresby, we explore the National Museum's vast collection of tribal artwork.


Photography Notes: The museum visit offers a chance for detailed still-life photography of Papua New Guinea's rich artistic heritage.

Day 8 - INTERNATIONAL DEPARTURES or OPTIONAL EXTENSION


Transfer to the airport for those who are flying back or to Kokopo for the optional extension

TRIBES INTERACTION.- Every interaction with the tribes requires a specific agreement to conduct the dance. Daily circumstances may alter their conditions, but we typically obtain their agreement. In most cases, if we cannot reach a specific agreement, we are successful in arranging a similar experience with another tribal group.

 

TOUR LEADER.- Roberto Pazzi will not be accompanying this section of the tour that will be guided by an English-speaking experienced tour leader. 

 

 

Day 8 - PORT MORESBY – KOKOPO. TRIBAL DANCE.

 

After breakfast, we will be transferred to the airport for a flight to Kopkopo, the city capital of the East New Britain province island. Once arrived we will be witnessing a tribal dance of the Baining people.

The Baining people are particularly renowned for their unique and intricate ceremonial masks and dances. The Baining tribe lives in the mountainous and forested areas of the Gazelle Peninsula, and their lifestyle has traditionally been centered around subsistence agriculture, hunting, and gathering.

 

Their masks vary widely in design, ranging from simple to highly elaborate creations. Some masks are used for specific ceremonies, including initiation rites, fertility rituals, or agricultural festivals. The designs on the masks often represent animals, spiritual beings, or natural elements, embodying the tribe's connection to their environment and the spiritual world.

Day 9 - GAZELLE PENINSULA – RABAUL-

 

We will embark on a full-day excursion across the Gazelle Peninsula, encircling the scenic volcanic Blanche Bay. Our itinerary includes a visit to the vibrant Kokopo Market and the Kokopo Museum, which houses an array of WWII artifacts. We'll also make our way to the Volcano Observatory hill for stunning views. A highlight of our tour will be Rabaul, the once-beautiful German colonial city that was buried under volcanic ash following the 1994 eruption of Tavurvur volcano.

 

 Additionally, we'll explore the seaside Hot Springs at the base of Mt. Tavurvur and the historic New Guinea Club. This building, one of the area's few survivors, seems frozen in time, preserving its original furniture alongside a mix of tribal and WWII relics. This region served as the Japanese Pacific headquarters during WWII, and our visit will include Admiral Yamamoto’s bunker, a concealed Japanese boat cave, and the underground hospital. The surrounding area is dotted with relics from WWII, including guns, tanks, airplanes, and shipwrecks.

Day 10 - VISIT TO DUKE OF YORK ISLANDS.  BOAT JOURNEY.  TOLAI TRIBE.

 

Our day will be devoted to exploring the remarkable island and marine settings nestled between New Britain and New Ireland islands.

Following breakfast, we'll embark on a boat trip to the Duke of York archipelago, known for its pristine white sandy beaches and the Tolai tribe, distinguished by their children's unique combination of blonde curly hair and dark skin. A picnic lunch is planned on Pigeon Island with the tribe.

 

The islands are covered in lush vegetation, ranging from dense tropical rainforests to coastal mangroves. These green spaces provide habitat for a variety of land-based wildlife, including birds, insects, and small mammals. The natural vegetation also plays a crucial role in supporting the islands' ecosystems and maintaining the balance of the local environment.

Note: Should we encounter rough seas, alternative arrangements may be made.

Day 11 - FROM KOKOPO TO PORT MORESBY

 

Very early morning we plan to visit the Kokopo Market where they still use Shell Money (Tambu or Tabu).

After this very exciting visit we will head towards the airport for our flight to Port Moresby. The flight, offering breathtaking views, will reach its destination in approximately two hours. Upon arrival, we'll proceed to our hotel for check-in and spend the afternoon at leisure.

Accommodation for the night is arranged at the Hilton Hotel (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner included).

Papua New Guinea has inconsistent availability of healthcare services which may be difficult to obtain outside of Port Moresby. Pharmaceuticals may be scarce or unavailable.

COMFORT AND FITNESS LEVEL.-


Lodging: Good Hotels, and Basic Ecco Lodges. The final hotels could vary but, and keeping the same standards

 

The schedule will /could change, frequently. We will be traveling on most decent and some rough roads and sometimes have very long days. Road conditions vary greatly, especially in rural areas. Unexpected conditions (weather, government restrictions, etc.) can occur and make alternate routings necessary.

 

 

REQUIRED TRAVEL FITNESS


Level 3, Active. Appropriate for Travelers who are physically fit, lead active lives, are comfortable participating in long days of activities, and expect some physical exertion.

 

Our itinerary requires early morning departures and later evening returns. Travelers will be in remote and rugged regions, and may be touring with steep ascents/descents and uneven terrain.


At times you will be going uphill and downhill in a real forest.

 

 

INTERNAL FLIGHT DELAYS AND CHANGES.-


The only airline operating in the region has a history of frequent delays and occasional cancellations, we believe this buffer will help ensure the smooth running of the overall itinerary.

 

PNG is a destination that requires a certain level of flexibility and adaptability, especially when it comes to internal travel logistics.
